~Photos from the Library Display Case... Harold Washington Library 2012
Chicago street artists Brooks Golden and Nice–One have had a long and varied history producing artwork for display in the public arena.
An important figure in the Chicago street art/graffiti community, artist Brooks Golden explores our distinct American footprint by using acombination of folk, tribal–based and other visual symbolism to promote a sense of humor and allegory. In a 2011 interview with Sixty Inches From Center, Golden stated:
"I don’t think there is a big distinction between actual graffiti and streetart—it is all the same. It is all a pure expression of whatever thoughts or ideas you want to express. There are different roads to that same kind of thinking, some people come to graffiti [the spray painting route] and some people come from the art making, wheat pasting, stencil artist, creative side of that and they meet in the middle and they are both doing something that is technically for the law’s sake, that is not acceptable… It is all just an extension of being an artist without parameters."
A 2009 graduate of Columbia College, Nice–One is a street artist whose humorous and satirical characters can be spotted flying or driving in unexpected places around our urban landscape. All are identifiable by his signature scuba goggles and many, many colors. The two artists collaborated to create this original installation for the Library.
The artists, with guest curator Oscar Arriola, will discuss the making of their large-scale installation as well as the meaning and method of street art as art without parameters in their Artist Talk. Arriola has been documenting graffiti and street art since the late 1980’s and worked as a photographer on Chicago Rocks magazine. Many of the magazines and artworks in this exhibition are from his personal collection. A lifelong Chicagoan, Arriola has been with the Chicago Public Library for 20 years. He curates art exhibitions in Chicago and shows his photographic work nationally.(from :http://www.chicagotalks.org/2012/07/06/25333/)

CHICAGO STREET ART BOOK RELEASE AND SIGNING
FEATURED AT CHICAGO STREET ART SHOW MAY 13TH AT CHICAGO URBAN ART SOCIETY
Street Art stands as a bold, subversive and passionate form of expression. The practice of this medium involves working completely outside the normal expectations of what art is and what it can provide for a viewer. Chicago Street Artists offer unique unassuming public artworks that: challenge ideas, define politics, and adds a beautiful character to the cityscape. However, nearly all evidence of this history has been purposely erased.
As an author, Depre, has spent the last five years globe-trotting, writing, and photo documenting Street Art around the world. This new volume is a first for Chicago. Separating the genre from its roots in graffiti, Depre clearly and passionately explains his perspective and interest in a cultural tracing of Street Art. Working with four other photographers, the book is a photo documentary and serves as an overview of the often over-looked but vital art scene that appears and disappears on the streets of Chicago. (See extended credits for collaborating photographers).
Part history lesson, part field guide, part cultural insider wisdom, the book is offered as a legitimate pictorial text that moves the Street Art practice into the position as an important cultural marker distinctive to a specific city and time. Featuring six short essays from Depre, as well as, some words and over 200 full color images from notorious Artists and Photographers of the Chicago Street Art community. This is MUST have volume for anyone who has wandered the Chicago’s Streets and wondered about the artists who have grace walls with humor, beauty, insight, or critique year after year. The text is designed to get the reader to a place of understanding, appreciation, and co-habitation with these remarkable and temporary works.
The release of Chicago Street Art will be a featured event on May 13 at the opening of a retrospective of Chicago Street Art at the Chicago Urban Art Society, 2229 South Halsted. The show will run until June 4.
~~~im super excited about this...its gonna be an interesting moment!!!!
The Drawn2 Project events are a chance for artists to get together, draw and share with the public.
This is how it works:
As a guest artist you come to the gallery with your drawing materials. You then set up however you like and draw whatever you like. If you want to sell, you post it on the gallery's walls.
As a guest you come to the gallery, watch artists create, talk to people, have a drink or two and have a good time.
Easy.
GUEST ARTISTS:
Alejandro Ayala
Czr Prz
Peter Kepha
Brooks Golden
Exhaust One
Solo
and others...
Anyone is welcome to participate but table space is reserved for guest artists first. After that is first come, first served.
please come out and show yer support....
~Art on Track this weekend! (updated 10/15/09)
Art on Track is a mobile art experience aboard an eight-car CTA train, which circles the Chicago loop for a day long celebration of fine arts culture.
The entrance to Art on Track is at the Adams and Wabash CTA platform (Between 200 and 220 S. Wabash). Here you will be able to get your AoT ticket. You will not need to buy a CTA pass to ride the art train. Once you are on the train feel free to interact and explore as much as you like, we will make stops around the loop for you to switch train cars. The handicap entrance is at Washington and wells (36 N Wells).
~Martha Cooper Goin Postal (Chicago version) book signing and release party
In addtion to all the madness that will be happening between the making deals gig at NOVEM and the Book signing just doors down , im scheduled to show at least one painting and Ive contributed a print and an original 8x10 drawing for the silent auction Saturday, May 2nd 2009.
You can't miss this one! On Friday, May 1st Martha Cooper will be in Chicago signing copies of the new 25th Anniversary edition of Subway Art and Going Postal books! We're curating a huge handmade sticker exchange for the event. And just a few doors down at the Novem Studios Store, our own Frank Serpico will be premiering his new zine, Making Deals.
UPSET MAGAZINE & NOVEM STUDIOS PRESENTS:
Martha Cooper’s 25th Anniversary Edition of Subway Art
and Going Postal Book Signing
First Ever Chicago Handmade Sticker Exchange--All Stickers $5
and Making Deals Zine Premiere
Friday, May 1st 5-10 PM
For the first time in her forty year career, famed street photojournalist Martha Cooper will be coming to Chicago to release the highly anticipated 25th anniversary edition of the bestselling book Subway Art. The new edition features a large-scale deluxe format, heightening the visual impact of her classic graffitti images and adding new photographs and text. Going Postal, Cooper’s new book about the burgeoning postal sticker art scene in New York will also be available. Cooper will have photographs for sale at the event, and artist and Chicago native, Thor will be creating an art installation based on Subway Art. The event will take place at Novem Life, 1114 N. Ashland in Chicago.
Martha Cooper is a Manhattan-based documentary photographer whose vintage images of graffiti and hip hop culture are widely published. Subway Art, originally published in 1984, instantly became a staple in the collections of graffiti art and hip-hop fans everywhere and is commonly referred to as, “the graffiti bible.” The project was an in-depth look at the environment captured during the 1970s and 80s by photographers Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant.
To coincide with Cooper’s release of her other new book, Going Postal, Upset, a collective of artists from Chicago and New York, presents a handmade sticker art sale featuring work from many of the artists in Cooper’s postal sticker art book. Over 60 artists from New York and Chicago are involved in the sale. All stickers sell for only $5 and artists are encouraged to exchange stickers with other artists. Featured artists include Blanco, C-Damage, Faust, The Sevenist, Overconsume, Stomach, and more.
Never Forget. We are also looking for contributions of small artwork, no bigger than 8x10, for a silent auction that will take place in Chicago on Saturday, May 2nd. If you are interested in contributing, please respond to this or email upsetmagazine@gmail.com. All proceeds will go to the Families of Fausto Manzera, Andrew Cazares and Nazon Simmons Rest In Peace.
~Sorry for the Miscommunication( UPDATE w/ pics!)
April 3- May 16 Kansas City, MO
Over 30 artists, in a spectrum of media: graffiti, street art projections, found objects creations, wheat-paste-ups, painting, sculpture, installation and video.
By revealing the common ground by which we relate to others, we challenge misunderstandings and judgments to find the sympathy, empathy and humor we need to connect.
"Sorry …" reveals and explores our inner and outer dialogues as a bridge across the gaps between divergent social constructions: street artists, fine artists, visual artists, viewer, consumer and the public.
the show was a huge success, tons of attendees, good vibes and good spirits...
