~New Interview @ On The Wall(PILSEN)

"When asked why an owl, Golden simply replied, “ I’m obsessed with birds.” But his fascination with owl imagery began in 2007. The indigenous history behind these nocturnal birds of prey and the folklore attached to them appeals to Golden in a special way, particularly because of his Native-American descent."

~(@v@) Owl mural In Pilsen and Sun~Times Article

Click On Photo for enlarged version
Brooks Golden, painted an owl on the 16 Street wall beneath the railroad tracks near Paulina. Chicago Alderman Danny Solis, is stepping up a campaign to use public art to combat crime and graffiti. Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Scott Stewart~Sun Times

Brooks Golden, a 38-year-old studio artist from Pilsen, finished painting a mural of a giant owl head last week at 16th and Paulina at the request of the alderman’s staff.

“It felt great. It gives me the opportunity to share the work with the community, which is probably the most satisfying. I got pretty much nothing but positive feedback from all the neighbors,” Golden said Wednesday.

“There are movements all over Europe where whole sides of buildings have been given to artists. Here, I always felt the city had a problem with art on walls. It’s a stigma attached to graffiti. This is the first time I’ve seen artists approached to paint in communities like this large-scale murals of their choosing.”

If the mural movement can somehow spread citywide, Golden said it would “bring people from around the world to Chicago to take pictures ….It’s kind of hard to believe we haven’t done this already.”

And why the head of an owl?

“It’s my favorite iconic animal,” Golden said. “I love the way they look. I love the way they fly silently, their solitary nature. They make for a pretty intimidating animal.”

~On Public Art: “An Artist Without Parameters” A conversation with Brooks Golden

~I did a pretty lengthy interview with friends at ...Sixty Inches From Center....PT. 1 of 2

Brooks Golden. 2011. (Photograph by Nicolette Caldwell)

""Brooks Golden aka Be Golden© is a tremendously important figure in the Chicago street art community. The relationship between Brooks and the “raw” nature of “street art” is like an abiding romance. Brooks Golden appreciates the optimistic, tight-knit local community that has positioned itself parallel to the continued dichotomy of “street art”. His breadth of knowledge about the history of “street art” is impressively comprehensive and personal.""

"It is against this civic backdrop that the fledgling art organization Sixty Inches From Center organized their exhibition “Contemporary Graffiti,” at the C33 Gallery in Chicago, featuring the work of Azteca, Klepto, Blutt, Zoe McCloskey, Hebru Brantley, Magda Sayeg, Brooks Golden, Stockyard Institute, Jova el Graffista."

~Chicago Art Magazine Blog.. Top Street Art Picks for the Month of September

(FROM THEIR WEBSITE)

By Fruzsina Eordogh

"The street art of September was so very plentiful.

I like to think I am partially responsible for the proliferation, but I know there are greater forces at work besides my delusions of grandeur, forces much more mundane – like the coming cold weather. Tiptoe has returned from his holiday, and the respectable (now ” retro” ) Senor Codo has reemerged with his pac-man inspired stickers and baseball-capped figures, a staple of his since 2006".

(then some extremely generous words by the author)
"If a street art king could be crowned for the month of September, that king would be Brooks Golden. Not only is his work at the Sixty Inches from Center exhibit, but this year he was invited to participate in the Meeting of Styles Chicago event for the first time'.

~ Studio Chicago Art Blog.."They do It for free"...

from their website...

...Skill and studio practice
"Within the last two decades contemporary street art has become widely popular amongst many artists who combine both traditional studio practice and self-taught skills such as “graffiti writing”. Graffiti Writing is comprised of self-designed graphic font, text and symbols. Not all street artists have a background in graffiti writing and not all graffiti writers are practicing street artists. Participating artists in Sixty Inches From Center: Contemporary Graffiti are Jova el Grafista, Hebru Brantley, Brooks Golden and Blutt who all work with a variety of media and uniquely incorporate traditional elements of graffiti style. Like all the artists in the exhibition, they all work in and out of the studio".

~The Brookeship has sailed....

...to Frankfurt, Germany recently with its new owner who is presenting it as a wedding present to his about to be wife!

A work on paper done with fine point red felt tip pen, "Brookesship" is a story of the "lives that might have been" and a desire to document his feelings about the infamous "Middle Passage" slave trading and also his interpretation of the "slaves overboard" scene from the movie "Amistad".

Named after the ship "Brookes" (also thought to be spelled Brooks"), and in reality, the artists name (and the English side of his family), you can imagine the passion placed in this piece measuring 20"w x 24" h.

The purchaser's fiancee, who i also got to meet, just happens to be in the US to get her Ph.d.... in "forced labor". You can imagine her excitement as she saw "Brookesship".

More of Brooks B. Golden's red felt tip pen on paper works can be found at the Gallery and HERE

~Solve Lives Article (updated with pics)

(From a previous Blog)

Last Sunday the Madison Wisconsin paper The Capital Times Wisconsin State Journal...had an article on the front page of their art and entertainment section honoring and talking at length about a new exhibition of mural boards created in Brendan 'Solve' Scanlon's honor.

"Other pieces are more whimsical. A panel created by DJ Burton and Laedan Galicia of Kansas City looks like notebook paper with big, doodled flowers and vividly colored houses, city streets winding through in purple and red. It recalls SOLVE's youth -- he wasn't long out of high school, where he was a constant doodler.

A piece by an artist called "Nice One" recalls anime and graphic novel art, while Brooks B. Golden's Illuminati triangle hovering on a cloud pops off the wall with bright oranges, purples and blues."
